Transforming Washing Powder Sales in Kenya with Smartfill Dispensers

Breaking the Packaging Paradigm

At Smartfill, we believe in challenging outdated practices to create a more sustainable and inclusive future. In Kenya, the widespread use of small sachets for washing powders has long been the norm, meeting affordability needs for low-income consumers. However, these sachets come with significant downsides: they contribute to plastic waste and limit opportunities for retailers to scale sales volumes.

Recognizing the need for a better solution, Smartfill joined forces with Unilever and BOPinc to revolutionize the way consumers access essential products. Together, we introduced an innovative packageless dispensing system that allows consumers to purchase the exact quantity of washing powder they need—without the environmental burden of sachets.

Empowering Consumers and Retailers with Flexible Solutions

Our Smartfill solids dispensers were strategically deployed in small supermarkets across low-income areas of Nairobi. Designed to prioritize affordability, ease of use, and accessibility, these dispensers empower consumers to make flexible purchasing decisions. Whether they need just a few grams or larger quantities, customers can buy exactly what fits their budget, often at a lower cost than prepackaged alternatives.

At the same time, retailers benefit from reduced packaging expenses and increased margins. By selling washing powder in bulk, they can cater to diverse consumer needs while significantly lowering their reliance on single-use plastics. This win-win model showcases how sustainability and affordability can go hand in hand, reshaping the way everyday essentials are sold.

Driving Adoption and Building Momentum

The impact of our pilot program has been remarkable. Thousands of transactions are recorded at each participating store every month, with over 100 kilograms of washing powder sold per location. Consumers have embraced the opportunity to buy just the right amount of product, demonstrating strong demand for this flexible and cost-effective solution.

As adoption continues to grow, the program highlights the potential for wider implementation in Kenya and beyond. It proves that sustainable practices can thrive in developing markets, delivering tangible benefits for both consumers and the planet.

A Call to Action for a Sustainable Future

This initiative is more than a retail experiment—it’s a step toward a more sustainable and equitable world. At Smartfill, we are committed to eliminating single-use plastics while ensuring that sustainable solutions remain accessible and affordable for all.

By reimagining the way washing powder is packaged and sold, we’re helping to build a retail system that works for people and the planet. Now, we invite brands, retailers, and innovators to join us in shaping the future of sustainable retail. Together, we can transform the way products are delivered, reducing waste and empowering consumers—one refill at a time.
